Conner Habib Featured At Lavender Lounge

I’ve known Conner Habib around town, but only just a little bit. We have mutual friends and I’ve seen him at industry functions. I was thrilled when he contacted me out of the blue to do a couple scenes for Lavender Lounge.

I always thought Conner was cute, a perfect little hairy bear cub. He is a bright guy (one of the best educated guys in porn) and works in the industry for reasons other than most guys do. It’s more of a cultural experiment for him, but he does like the money, too.

Conner chose to work with Spencer Reed, someone who wasn’t really on my radar, but I’ve lusted after his body for a while. I would never have been able to track down a guy like Spencer Reed on my own. It’s one of those lucky couplings that only happens when you let the models pick their own scene partners.

Conner makes a good bottom and is really believable with “dirty talk” because it comes naturally for him, rather than forced. See for yourself as he gets fucked by Spencer Reed, the big, hunky muscle bear.

Strand Theater To Be Revived

Strand Theater Revival

Strand Theater In It's Heyday - Soon To Be Revived

This morning I was thrilled to read that the Strand Theater is soon to be revived. American Conservatory Theater has purchased the building to re-open as a live theater venue. The Strand holds a special place for me in that on my very first day in San Francisco I spent the afternoon watching a matinee, but there is more to the story.

It was October of 1981 and I was temporarily staying with a college friend in Santa Cruz. I drove up for the day to investigate the City. I knew San Francisco was gay, but I had no idea how gay it was. I didn’t know there were gay neighborhoods, I didn’t know there was a gay parade, or gay gyms, and I had never seen a gay bar with windows.

At the time, my friends and I would go to movie matinees a couple times a week, so that activity was part of my routine for a day off. With no iPhones or internet to check theater listings, I saw a flyer for the Strand theater but didn’t know the address. I went to a payphone (!) and called Information for the number.

If calling 411 from a payphone is not antiquated enough, there were still live operators that looked it up for you. Directory Assistance was robotic even before they actually became robotic, but on this occasion when asked for the number of the Strand Theater, an extremely nelly voice jumped out of the phone exclaiming, “Oh, you’re going to the Joan Crawford Double Feature!” Not only was I already taken aback by that statement, but what he said in the next breath when he switched to a deep, sexy voice absolutely floored me:

“Front row of the balcony. Here’s your number.”

I was too naive and nervous to actually investigate the balcony that day, but I will never forget that story.

Strand Theater

Shabby-Chic Strand Theater Today Soon To Be Revived

Throughout the 80′s the Strand Theater was a legitimate choice for 2nd run films, often showing double and triple features for one price, and one of the last theaters you could walk in or out between scheduled show times. I remember seeing “Eraserhead” there, a film that would never get shown in a theater if it were released as first-run today. It was also the place to see “Rocky Horror Picture Show” at midnight for many years.

Here’s what CinemaTreasures.org says:

This theatre opened on October 27, 1917 as part of the Grauman chain. It changed hands shortly thereafter and would change hands again in 1925 and 1939.

The West Side Theatre Company operated the Strand Theatre from 1940-1977. With the advent of television in the 1950’s and Market Street starting to decline in the 1960’s, the attendance at the theatre dropped (along with a change in the audience). Programming was triple bills, changed daily, with nightly bingo games.

Mike Thomas and a partner bought the Strand Theatre in 1977. (Thomas would also acquire and operate several other Market Street theatres around this time: the Warfield Theatre, the Crest Theatre, and the Embassy Theatre. He would later start up the independent film distributor Strand Releasing.) Thomas redid the theatre and hired security to help clear out undesirables. In June 1977, Thomas reopened the Strand Theatre with a revival of the Howard Hughes production of “The Outlaw” (which premiered originally down the street in 1943 at the United Artists Theatre aka Market Street Cinema). The show sold out and the Strand Theatre would become a well-known venue for revival cinema. The Strand Theatre also became a popular venue for midnight showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.

The mid-1980’s took a toll on the Strand Theatre. Home video took a bite into the revival theater business. Market Street would decline further. Then the October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake would cause the Strand Theatre to close temporarily. (Its neighbor, the Embassy Theatre, wasn’t so lucky, as it was too badly damaged to reopen.) When the Strand Theatre reopened, it was sold to Silver Screen Amusements. (Thomas would still book the theatre.)

In June 1994, the Strand Theatre closed, only to reopen weeks later as a porn theatre showing projected video. The theatre deteriorated even further as it became a haven for crack dealers and hookers. Finally, in early-2003, the city of San Francisco would raid the theatre and shut it down for good. This was also the end to theatres that showed movies on Market Street.

More Editing, More Updates

Lavender LoungeLast week I barely made the deadline to deliver new scenes to maintain our weekly updates on LavenderLounge.com. Whew. Now I have 4 more weeks to get the next batch to them.

I am currently editing scenes that will debut around the end of March through the month of April. It would be easy to blog about scenes that are currently on my mind, but that would potentially piss off a reader that gets all hot and bothered about a scene they can’t see yet. So I am left with leaving vague references to tease you while going back to heavy promote scenes I haven’t looked at since the summer. (I should probably do writing in advance, too, but that would make too much sense…)

I finished editing a nice solo scene last night and really spent a lot of time on the 2 minute trailer. It will integrate video with still photos that were taken at the same time. It’s going to be really nice, and best of all, it will be softcore enough for Facebook and YouTube. Hopefully, that will get more eyeballs to see it.

While I am editing scenes for the website, I also have a new plan for releasing DVDs of the same material, too. I am so glad that I am now able to clear the decks of superfluous tasks and just concentrate on MY content and MY projects. You’re gonna love it, too.

lady bunny slams!

World famous drag queen Lady Bunny came through Toronto recently and delivered a body slam to those gays wanting to fight in the military.

“If gays are against bullying and people with a brain are against bullying of any kids of any kind, why are gays seeking the right to go and bully people in a uniform?” asks Lady Bunny. “Because their skin is brown? Because they’re Muslim? I don’t approve of that.”

you’re not ugly by margaret cho

You’re not ugly.

Not in the least, so don’t make those videos. Take them down if they are up. You don’t need people to tell you how beautiful you are on there. You don’t need to put yourself in the position to be judged that way. You are better than that, and you deserve the very best in life. If I could come through this screen and tell you and show you and bolster you and buoy you up and raise you high above all the bad sh*t you are going through, so that your spirit is free and you feel like you are flying, I would. I’d give anything if I could find a way to show you how lovely and perfect you are. If you’d believe me when I say that you are amazing, that you are the only you in the world, and that that makes you special and precious and holy, truly one of a kind, it would make me the happiest.

I thought I was so ugly for so long, and I wasted so much of my life on this dumb notion. I punished myself and avoided my reflection in mirrors and any windows. I would see myself reflected back, and I would look away, trying to pretend I didn’t exist, because I hated myself so much. I hated the way I looked, and it started early on. My father found a school project from first grade where I had written on a photo of myself that I looked like a flat-faced mummy. Firstly, how does a kid that young know what a flat-faced mummy is? Secondly, I cry at my own self-judgement, and thirdly, I was such a cute kid. Imagine my face, and then miniaturize it in your mind until the age of 6. I know, f***ing adorable.

One day I looked at myself and thought: Sh*t, this is it. This is what I look like. No amount of self-hatred is going to change my appearance. I am who I am. I am stuck with this, and I have to love it, or else I am going to die early from my own suffering and idea that I got shortchanged in the looks department.

Why go through life feeling cheated? It does nothing but make you bitter. I don’t want to be bitter. I want to be better. I want you to be better. I don’t want you to waste all those years like I did. I didn’t get to the point of feeling really good about myself until my 40s. That was pretty much 40 years of uninterrupted self-loathing that I had no need for. I never got to enjoy my youth; I was a gorgeous kid, and I missed it because I hated myself for no reason. I am kicking myself because I missed out on so much happiness because I had this idea that I was ugly that I couldn’t shake, partly because others — people who had their own issues with self-hatred and took it out on me — supported it. I don’t want you to miss out on a minute of your fantastic lives.

Let’s just say that I am right and you are beautiful, end of story. I have so much love for you, and I want your lives to be richer, happier, and better than mine. I want to make these mistakes so that you don’t have to, like on a group ride where the leader rides ahead and can alert you to the potholes and other dangers on the road. I am just pointing them out to you because I have been there. I know this place, this life, and I have some advice. I hope you take it.
