‘Boots Sex Dread’: hardcore gay reggae from 1980 (from steve t)
Boots Sex Dread is the name of an anonymous reggae act (is it a band or just and MC? or two MCs?) who brought out a one-off single in 1980 that became instantly notorious. Both sides of the release feature heavy dub riddims coupled with explicitly gay toasting. Like, REALLY explicit.
One side is titled “Rinka” and features an MC coming out: “Mi black and mi proud and mi a Rastafari/And mi a ‘omo-sek-shual”. There then follows an hilarious list of anal sex euphemisms. The flip is titled “Prenton Pressure” and features a different, coarse voiced MC regaling us with the story of how he met his Asian boyfriend, and how their sexual relations in a cornership store room (involving lots of bizarre condiments – Brillo Pads?!) were interrupted by the boyfriend’s mother.
Information on this record is scarce, but rumors about who the authors/vocalists may be have been rife since it was first written about in the NME on its 1980 release. The theory that has gained most credibility is that Boots Sex Dread is the work of the British comedian and actor Keith (father of Lily) Allen. An anonymous source close to Dangerous Minds can semi-confirm this:
It was rumored to be Keith Allen. And Rinka was supposed to be named after Norman Scott’s dog who was shot by the hit man hired by Jeremy Thorpe. [Background: Jeremy Thorpe was the leader of the British Liberal party from ‘67-‘76. Norman Scott claimed to be his gay lover, and Thorpe was aquitted on charges of conspiring to murder Scott in 1979.]
But this was the story running the rounds when Julie Burchill banged on about it as being gay Reggae. Not convinced, but it sounds like it could be him. He is an accomplished pianist, as I found out when I spent 3 nights on the batter with him, whilst he was filming Shallow Grave.
Keith had a character he played on Channel 4 late night back in the early 80s, where he played a gay miner, who’s dad was gay and his father before him, etc. Led to religious people saying he shouldn’t be allowed on TV etc, as they thought Keith was genuinely gay.

Grant Morrison, who writes for Action Comics, spoke about the comic superhero during an interview with Playboy magazine, when the topic of a possible gay relationship between Batman and his sidekick Robin, came up.
Mr Morrison said that Batman was “very plutonian in the sense that he’s wealthy and also in the sense that he’s sexually deviant.
“Gayness is built into Batman,” he said, adding, “I’m not using gay in the pejorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There’s just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he’s intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay.”
The writer also said that this very “gayness” was responsible for the near-universal appeal of the character. “I think that’s why people like it,” he said. “All these women fancy him and they all wear fetish clothes and jump around rooftops to get to him. He doesn’t care — he’s more interested in hanging out with the old guy and the kid.”
On Batman’s nemesis, the Joker, he said: “He’s Batman’s perfect opposite, and because of that he’s as sexy as Batman, if not more so… I quite like him, because he’s a pop star—he’s like Bowie.”

Earliest Painting Of Transvestite Uncovered In London Gallery (via huffpost)
“Chevalier D’Eon”, an 18th-century portrait sold in New York to a British gallery as a “woman in a feathered hat” turns out to actually portray a man dressed as a woman, becoming the earliest known painting of a transvestite.
Since the painting’s unveiling this week, “we’ve had an interesting succession of individuals coming to pay homage,” Mould said. “It’s a combination of mirth and respect for a man who was bold enough, brave enough, but also extrovert enough to state his case.”
In fact, D’Eon apparently lived the second half of his life as a transvestite during a time when cross-dressing was essentially unheard of.
Here’s how D’Eon’s transvestitism came to pass: He joined King Louis XV’s secret service in 1755, had his first major military posting in London in 1763, before being appointed Plenipotentiary Minister to London. However, within months, he had a falling-out with the ambassador appointed to replace him in London, accusing the ambassador of trying to murder him. D’Eon also made public secret documents and ended up being sent to prison, which he escaped. [A Gallery of Death in Art]
Once escaped, D’Eon concealed his identity, reportedly, by dressing as a woman. Gossip about his gender began in 1770, with rumors that people were even betting on whether he was a man or a woman.
“D’Eon refused all offers to confirm or deny the rumor,” Simon Burrows, professor of modern history at the University of Leeds, said in a statement in 2010. “He also demanded the French government pay off his debts and they agreed, terrified he would betray state secrets, including plans to invade England.”
And after that, apparently D’Eon was forced to adopt female dress, and others accepted him as a female. So much so, that the truth was only revealed upon a medical examination after his death on May 21, 1810, which revealed his very male anatomy. Reportedly, his housekeeper did not “recover from the shock for many hours,” according to the gallery.
The term “eonism,” which is used in psychiatry to describe male adoption of female dress and manners, was derived from D’Eon’s name.

AWESOME! dyke (a quarterly) 1976- 1979
ABOUT DYKE, A Quarterly
DYKE, A Quarterly was created by Liza Cowan and Penny House. We had been best friends since we were four years old and had both recently come out as Lesbians. In 1975 we were in our mid twenties. Liza had moved to a farm in upstsate New York and Penny was living in New York City, where we had both grown up.
All over The United States Lesbians were getting together to make culture: music, literature, theater, art exhibits, film, poetry, and all kinds of media. We were right in the thick of it, enjoying every minute, and decided that making a magazine would be our contribution.
This is the annotated archive of the magazine we created. We hope you enjoy reading the issues and taking a peek at some of what went on behind the pages: the sketches, ideas, layout guides, fliers, reviews, and even some of the angry letters. And, of course, it’s filled with commentary and backstory.
We invite you to add your comments and memories.
