“Only In San Francisco” Connections
I enjoyed the Frameline Film Festival's Sunday morning program, "Only In San Francisco", for several reasons. Though the three films, "Christmas House", "Smut Capital of America", and "Running In Heels", were quite divergent, they all had a lot of things interconnected and I felt like I was the common denominator that connected all the dots.
First up, we saw how every Christmas, two queens on 21st Street and Church enlist an army of elves to decorate a 65 foot tree and the sidewalk in front of their house. It's beautiful, charming and awe-inspiring. Last year a fan of the Christmas House offered to film the construction process, initially just to show at his own Christmas party. The first time film maker submitted it to Frameline, and despite the amateur quality of camera work and editing, it was nice to spotlight this lovely, heartfelt yearly project. In the Q&A afterward, the director was tickled to explain his connection to Christmas madness. He was born a couple days before Christmas in an East Coast town named Bethlehem, his father is named Joseph and is a retired carpenter. Freaky.
From the kid-friendly Christmas film, we jumped to a film short documenting San Francisco's history as "Smut Capital of America". What began as a documentary about Falcon Studio's founder, Chuck Holmes, producer Mike Stabile put together a spin-off featuring more broad-based interviews and stories about the adult industry in general and it's emergence in pre-gentrified San Francisco. Interviews included John Waters relishing the seedy underbelly of the Tenderloin, porn writer Jeffery Escoffier, gay porn reviewer John Karr (KarrnalKnowledge.com) and GayVN Hall of Famer, Katherine Reed.
Early Film By SF Smut Peddler Alex DeRenzy
Reed's story was probably what inspired the spin-off from the original project simply because of the wealth of history she witnessed first-hand that has never been documented. Katherine Reed started out as a stripper and remained working in the industry in several capacities for somewhere around 40 years. The father of her children was the famous straight porn director Alex DeRenzy, a competitor to the more (in)famous Mitchell Brothers down the street. Just like the Mitchell Brothers' story that started out as a documentary and eventually became a big budget Hollywood feature starring Emilio Estavez and Charlie Sheen, there's a big story behind Alex DeRenzy and other SF smut peddlers waiting to be made. "Smut Capital of America" left the audience wanting for much, much more.
But then the Sunday morning program shifted gears drastically once more. "Running In Heels" told the story of Glendon "Annaconda" Hyde, the drag queen that ran for Supervisor last fall. Again, it was another first time film maker that saw a story that needed to be told and ran with it, not knowing where it would lead. We saw a very personal story of what it means to run a truly grass-roots political campaign.
Though the three films offerings in "Only I San Francisco" were widely disjointed, I personally had a running connection between all three.
Beside being a close friend of "Running In Heels"'s Annaconda, I was thrilled to see one of my photographs used in movie on one of her club posters. Beside working in the smut industry and my growing collection of vintage gay porn, I knew all the integral players involved in producing "Smut Capital of America", and I've met all but two of the people interviewed.
Besides working for Katherine Reed myself and later renting my studio to her, she also introduced me to Alex De Renzy. She invited me to DeRenzy's palatial home in Marin when he was selling off some lighting equipment. I ended up buying some industrial quality light fixtures and stands that I still use today.
But the freakiest connection between these three movies came when Tom Taylor, one of the subjects of the "Christmas House", told the story of knowing Katherine Reed (from "Smut Capital") for over 20 years and describing her shooting gay porn movies at the same house. As it turns out, I was there at those shoots holding the crotch light for some of those shoots and Katherine hired me to edit three of the movies we shot there! Click the link to see one of them!

GayVN Awards Delayed But Possibly Broadcast On TV
CHATSWORTH, Calif.—The GAYVN Awards, presented annually in recognition of stellar achievement in the gay adult entertainment industry, will be presented in 2010 for the 12th year, the chief of parent company AVN Media Network said Thursday.
“There is absolutely no possibility the awards will be cancelled, and we must put an end to these outrageous rumors,” Chief Executive Officer Darren Roberts said. “We’ve been doing this event for a long, long time, and we will continue to recognize gay adult companies for their achievements.”
Roberts said the GAYVN Awards ceremony would be delayed, due to economic factors that have affected every industry.
“The challenges facing our business are no different than any other business in America right now,” Roberts said. However, “we are going to recognize the individuals and companies as we always have. Our energies at the moment are focused on providing the industry with the quality and the type of show they’ve come to expect. We don’t want to have to step back from that.”
Like the AVN Awards on the straight side of the adult industry, the GAYVN Awards were designed as an homage to an industry sector to which the parent company has been committed for 28 years.
“While financial considerations are very important, the GAYVN Awards are, and always have been, done from a passion for what we do,” Roberts said. “They are not about profitability.”
The GAYVN Awards show “has never made money—never,” he added. “That was not the goal. In the past, we had the financial freedom to afford the losses. In this economy, nobody has the freedom to afford losses in any business.”
With that in mind, and with the successful execution of pay-per-view contracts that for the first time will broadcast the 2010 AVN Awards into more than 90 million households around the world, AVN has spent the past few months in talks with major U.S. and international broadcast networks that are interested in giving the GAYVN Awards international exposure.
That’s good news for the adult industry as a whole, Roberts said, as experience has proven in both the mainstream and adult that high-profile awards like the AVNs, the GAYVNs and the Oscars convince consumers to pay for nominated and winning products instead of downloading inferior materials from pirate resources online.
“Awards make a difference not only to companies, but also to consumers,” Roberts said. “Consumers are much more likely to pay to watch the original award-winner instead of watching it in bits and pieces on a tube site. The companies who were featured during the AVN Awards broadcast on Showtime [in 2008 and 2009] said the larger viewership has made a tremendous difference in their product sales.”
Roberts said additional information about the 2010 GAYVN Awards will be made public as soon as it is available.
My Cameo In “The Visitor”
Gore Vidal says, "Never miss a chance to have sex or be on TV." A few weeks ago I got a chance to do both. I responded to an email from Raging Stallion's Scott Tanner that they needed extras for a bar scene they were shooting. I've done plenty of extra work in mainstream movies and it's usually excruciating. Extra work in porn films is much more fun, so I never miss an opportunity.
This one was simple, too. All I had to do was show up at Chaps bar in leather and hang out for an afternoon. Turns out the movie was "The Visitor" by Raging Stallion, directed by Ton Dimarco. It stars Logan McCree as a alien sent to study the sexual habits of human males, and Tony described it as "The Man Who Fell To Earth combined with Terminator". Logan McCree makes the perfect alien, his striking looks surely must be from another world.
There were three other extras, a cutie pie stripper from around town who hung with Raging Stallion regular Connor Habib and shaved head guy named Brad. The three models in the scene were hairy daddy Bruno Bond, Logan McCree and tall lanky submissive I see around at the gym. We were told to just be background while the other three did their thing.
I wasn't given much direction and didn't know how far we should go sexually, but after a few minutes it came clear. Hey, this is a gay porn movie! Go for it! Brad and I positioned ourselves directly behind the action, and even though we didn't get any close-ups like the other two more attractive extras did, we were seen throughout. Since we were not getting paid, the other two extras, a porn star and a stripper, must have decided they weren't going to show much without some dinero. Me, I didn't care, I take it when I can get it.
Not only was it surreal to look through dark tinted mirrored sunglasses in a dark bar, but there I was, this 53 year old pudgy nerd in the middle of a sexually charged Raging Stallion scene with one of my porn idols. At any moment I was afraid the director would move me out of the shot for ruining the action, but that never happened. In fact, when it came time for my dreamboat, Logan McCree, to shoot his load, I got so worked up that I needed shoot my load as well. I figured this would be my only chance to cum with Logan McCree, so I set aside my inhibitions and timed it so we both ejaculated at the exact some moment. Though we didn't touch, I was literally only inches away from the current GayVN Performer of the Year at the height of ecstasy each with our dicks in our hand. It was a moment to remember.
I have been waiting patiently for the movie to come out to see if my cum shot made it into the movie. Alas, my big scene is on the proverbial cutting room floor! I was in perfect view just as Logan was about to let go, he leaned forward and blocked the view of me from both cameras! Dammit! Even if there were footage somewhere, but I'm not even sure I want to see it. On one hand, it's a turn on to be involved in a super hot scene like this, but having to actually look at myself exposed is unsettling. I suppose everyone is somewhat critical of themselves onscreen, and that's why a lot of mainstream actors never look at themselves in films. Imagine being that critical AND naked onscreen!

A few years ago at the GayVN Awards, I watched as Francois Sagat met Erik Rhodes for the first time. They were fooling around for another photographer, but as they looked into each others eyes they both realized a connection. And who wouldn't? They are two of the best looking guys in the world. A minute later, Erik Rhodes came up to me and told me he wanted to get fisted by Francois. He then asked me, "Who's Chris Ward?" I told him he's the owner of Raging Stallion. At the time, Francois Sagat was exclusive to Raging Stallion and he told Erik to talk to Chris about putting them in a movie together.
Fast forward to 2009 and the dream came true. Francois later became exclusive to Titan, and Erik is still with Falcon, so their exclusive contracts prevented them from working together - until now. Roman Heart Destined for A Guinness
Falcon sent a link to a blog item they posted with the teaser line "Roman Heart In Guinness Book of World Records..." question mark, question mark. Being in Guinness may be a bit presumptuous, but buying the boy a Guinness might be a more reasonable step toward immortality. In fact, it's his destiny that I buy him a beer... (see headline).
The cover story of the next Unzipped reads, "When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Pornstar", and this is the first generation where kids have actually chosen that as a career. I actually met Roman Heart only a few weeks after his 18th birthday and he was already working a booth for Falcon at a porn convention in Las Vegas. At the time, he told me to keep it on the downlow that he was actually still in High School at the time! The photo on the lower right was just a few months after that first meeting in Las Vegas in January 2005. Ex-Marine Soap Stud David Taylor Joins Raging Stallion
During GayVN week, Raging Stallion's Chris Ward introduced me to his most prized possession, 6'4" blond David Taylor. He had just signed an exclusive contract, along with a whole slew of fresh meat, but Chris was most thrilled by this one. Michael Lucas vs. Brent Corrigan: Statement from ASACP
I'm still on the fence about the shouting match at the GayVN Awards between Michael Lucas and Brent Corrigan.
In a nutshell, a citation from the City of San Francisco was presented to the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection (ASACP) for the good work they do keeping the adult business out of trouble. Right afterward, Michael Lucas rushed to the stage out of turn and pointed out the irony of how the GayVN's support ASCAP, yet they were also nominating and giving awards to Brent Corrigan, who used fake ID to work in porn while underage.
Later that night there was a shoving match at the after party, threats were made, the police were called to Corrigan's hotel room and his boyfriend was handcuffed for about an hour.
Here's where I am undecided about this controversy:
-Is is appropriate to speak out of turn at an awards show even if it's something important?
-Is it appropriate to air dirty laundry at this type of event?
-How long should Brent Corrigan have been blackballed from the industry for putting us all at risk?
-Is Brent Corrigan a role model to encourage other underage performers to use fake ID?
I like to remain on friendly terms with everyone. I also wanted some guidance on the subject matter, so I decided to call ASACP to get a statement regarding this issue, as they were at the center of it. Here is their response:
Statement from ASACP CEO Joan Irvine:
I appreciate Michael Lucas’ concern for ASACP and the industry that he expressed during the GayVN Awards show. Michael demonstrated the industry’s outrage when an underage actor slips into legitimate adult movies as this threatens the industry and shows a disregard for ASACP and the industry’s child protection effort.
In September 2005 when ASACP was alerted that Brent Corrigan was supposedly 17 while performing in four movies, it researched this and quickly informed the industry about the offending movies, and all titles and promotional materials were immediately removed from circulation and distribution, both online and offline.
This was a wakeup call back then and should be a warning to the industry about the importance of being vigilant to obtain the proper documentation for 2257 requirements and to check on questionable documents.
Brent is now over 18 and has the right to engage in whatever legal business he chooses."
And now it's up to Miss Manners to determine who's right and who's wrong.

I finished adding my photos from the GayVN Awards 2009 - the Tailgate Parties on Friday night, the Porn Star Brunch on Saturday morning and the Red Carpet before the awards. The are now available for Lavender Lounge VIP members in the Paparazzi Pics section.
Lavender Lounge was named Official Photographer of the GayVN Awards and I enlisted help from two other local paparazzi, so there is PLENTY of shots of your favorite porn stars. More photos will be added in the next few days, and as always, the show was wrought with controversy. Summary of GayVN Nominated Movies 2009
I just finished casting my votes for the GayVN Awards for 2009! Whew! What a job that was! As always, I had to go through a marathon of viewing movies at the last minute. Thank goodness I've been watching them throughout the year so I was a somewhat prepared.
As an over-all observation of the gay porn industry, I am once again impressed by the quality of films made this year. Though it gets tedious sometimes, every once in a while, I get blown away by a set design, a lighting technique, a special effect, or a breath taking location. Rarely do I see a sex position I've never seen before, but when I do, it may either challenge me or not, but I always welcome innovation. Each year the cameras and the computers get better, and the guys running them get more proficient.
I am going to give you a quick rundown of some of the movies I just watched over the last few days while they are still fresh in my mind.
To The Last Man by Raging Stallion will probably make an enormous sweep of the awards this year. It's the biggest epic undertaking of the year, and though not perfect, it deserves acclaim just for taking such big chances.
Titan's Funhouse picks up the carney /circus theme they've done once a year for the past few years incorporating real gymnasts and circus performers in their contortion-like sex positions. Francois Sagat appears in both Funhouse and Breakers as an oddball character that keeps showing up at odd times. Breakers is another coming-out-of-retirement project by Bruce Cam who has had more retirement parties than Cher. If you liked Bruce Cam's earlier outdoor epics, you'll like this one, too. It's got the same campfire scene in every one.
The Best Sex Comedy category was pretty sparse this year, but that one is always tough. Jet Set Men 's Jock Tease had a genuinely funny montage at the end, but the dialogue throughout the rest of the movie was just butch sounding jock posturing. Not so funny for guys that intimidated by that shit. Straight boy Aaron James seemed to enjoy his role as the sluttiest jock willing to fuck anyone anyhow, while the other gay actors tried to act like they weren't. Irony, darling, irony.
Sex Hiker from upstart company Black Scorpion was big surprise. They appear intent on out-classing their competitors to put out a super premium product. Starting with hiring a South American runway model, D.O. (pronounced Dee-oh), and mr. Pam, they spent a shit load of money not only on production, but the packaging to mimic a fashion magazine shoot.
Foreign films are always a treat because they often incorporate exotic locales. Both AMG Brasil's Rio and Lucas Kazan's Italians and Other Strangers impressed me with the b-roll footage of gorgeous scenery and showed some genuine effort in the production. Lucas Kazan can always be counted on to provide a beautiful tableau that is out of this world.
As another diversion, I got to see a lot of twink movies, and Brent Corrigan seems to have that category wrapped up - but how the hell is he going to transition to bear movies when he turns 30?
This year for the first time, the GayVN Awards have several categories honoring websites. Randy Blue has such a stable of incredible models, but has never put out any DVDs. It would be interesting to see how a feature-length Randy Blue movie on DVD would stack up against other movie studios. Hmm.
And finally, in the fetish / leather / kink categories, Hot House has really learned to mix beauty with pain to consistently put out outstanding products that are challenging and creative. But for raw, niche-specific, know-your-audience fetish material, I was impressed by Lucas Entertainment's Piss! I usually get quite queasy watching piss scenes, but this simple, straight forward look at the fetish was somehow engaging even to me. The piss scenes outdoors and in bath tubs I could understand, but when they were peeing indoors on the floor and leather furniture, I kept thinking about how to get rid of that smell! (I guess Michael Lucas is rich enough to just throw away furniture and move out!)
That's my summary of the best gay porn movies from 2008, and though I didn't give you all heaps of praise in this one blog entry, perhaps it will all pay off when you pick up your trophies! Congratulations everyone, and keep up the good work!

GayVN Awards Show and Related Parties
There is so much going on over the weekend of the GayVN Awards, I had to stop by the Naked Sword offices today just to have them help me sort it all out. Here's the scoop: Besides the big awards show and afterparty on Saturday, various gay porn studios will be holding their own parties on Friday the 27th, and they're pretty much all right around the block in the Castro. Buckshot Promotes Soundtrack For “Boy Country”
It's always a breath of fresh air when a gay porn company hires a real musician to provide the soundtrack for one of their movies. Judging the GayVN Awards for so many years, it seemed that for a while there were only 3 composers working for the entire industry, and each year they'd just take turns bringing home a trophy.
COLT had this to say about their new release, "Boy Country":
Since the release of BOY COUNTRY last week our customers have been raving about the music. Buckshot took a drastic change for this feature and hired musical talent Ron Perkov to compose it.
Ron has had two Top Ten Billboard Charting Dance singles – to "Love Divine" by Tony Moran in the movie "Circuit" and the single "Liv, Luv, Dance" in the new documentary "When Ocean Meets Sky" He also has a sexy chill-out cd titled Intimate Chill Out that can be bundled with your DVD purchase. So director Kristofer Weston took some time to find out more about this man behind the BOY COUNTRY soundtrack.
KW: Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started in the music Industry?
RP: After graduating college I met Dionne Warwick and she took a liking to me and I became a back up vocalist for her in the late 80's. From there I met a lot of music industry people which lead me to Victor Calderone and my first dance single "Dance With Me, Take Me Higher" went to #7 on Billboard. Then I met Junior where he put that song on his CD compilation "Junior Vasquez Vol 2".
From then I have met so many other DJ producers, Eddie Baez, David Knapp, Mark Anthony, etc. and then my dearest friend Tony Moran. Tony and I put out many dance hits, one (Love Divine) in the movie "Circuit", from "Live, Luv, Dance" and "I Get Off" all hitting above #17 on Billboard. All my dance singles are now on over 20 CD compilations around the world.
KW: How did you enjoy composing music for an adult oriented all–male feature like BOY COUNTRY.
RP: I enjoyed this experience immensely. It was my first time doing a soundtrack for a movie and I look forward to doing more. My engineer and I had a great time putting the music to the film. It was a pleasure working on BOY COUNTRY. I thank COLT Studio Group and Buckshot for the opportunity.
KW: Did you use any of your current hits or music on the BOY COUNTRY sound track?
RP: Yes, I took a few songs from the album and changed them around a bit and of course, I also took out all my vocals. It was challenging and fun creating and changing the music around but still being able to tie in the CD so that the public will still be able to relate to both the film and the CD.
KW: Do you think gay men will enjoy your sound in the intimacy of their bed room with their favorite Buckshot Boys?
RP: ABSOLUTELY!!!! I think this DVD will not only have the visual, but also a sexy audio that will appeal to all senses of the body.
KW: What are your plans for the near future?
RP: I am currently in the studio with Tony Moran writing a new dance single which should be available by the spring. I am also being considered for NY Gay Pride to perform on the Pier. I keep my fingers crossed on that because I am a native New Yorker and it would mean the world to perform for my friends and neighbors!

Lavender Lounge Photos In 100% Beef Magazine
This is already ancient history, but I figured I better post this item before I forget it. Or I should at least tear out these two pages before they get stuck together like all the other magazines next to my bed. (OOPS, did I say too much?)
A few months ago, 100% Beef Magazine (created by a couple former employees of the old Bear Magazine) ran a photo spread of my pictures from Hairrison Street Fair. The only way I even knew about it was by just flipping through magazines at A Different Light Bookstore! It caught me by complete surprise! It's always a thrill to get something published. I can now add yet another publication to the list of magazines my name or photos have appeared.
