Former Lavender Lounge Studio Burns
Last night there was a big fire at the Park Hotel on Folsom street. The UPS guy came to the door and said there was a big fire around the corner. I could smell the smoke, and the minute he said that, I knew what building it was.
From 1994 through 2000 I rented the ground floor store front space at 1044 Folsom in San Francisco as the first physical location for Lavender Lounge Studios. For about two years during that time I also rented the adjoining space at 1042 Folsom. The entrance to the Park Hotel on the second and third floors is 1040 Folsom. For the kind of projects I was working on 1200 or even 2400 square feet was barely minimal, and many potential clients turned it down because it was too small. With 43 residents living above that space, you can imagine how small those rooms were.
The studio space I rented at 1044 Folsom was a big, open area with bathroom and kitchen in the back. My first project was to build a loft area above the kitchen as my office. A few months after I moved in I got fired from my day job at a law firm, so I used that opportunity to work full time at producing gay porn movies.

On the one hand, I'm glad the bastards that own the building got what they deserved, but on the other hand, it's a disaster for everyone involved. The residents upstairs were one step from homeless, and now, sadly, they probably will be homeless. The residents of the Park Hotel were all on SSI or General Assistance, and it pisses me off that the bulk of their checks went right to the landlords, who did nothing to keep the place safe or livable.
The community will suffer because the building had so many permit violations it will be an eyesore for many years till they can get the permits to tear it down and start over. The landlords will get their insurance check in a couple days and not have to spend a nickel other than property tax. The land is probably more valuable now because it's not hampered by the City requirements that it remain a rent controlled low-income building.
The really sad part is the woman who only a few months ago opened a nice restaurant in my old unit at 1044 Folsom. It took her about 5-10 years to get that place up to code in order to open. She utilized every possible minority grant and small business program to get the place opened properly, including adding a whole new glass and marble facade across the front of the whole building. I am 100% certain the bastard landlords didn't give her a bit of help, and the moment she opened, they put a for sale sign on the building to cash in on her upgrades. Douchebags. Now she loses everything.
This should be a lesson - never rent from anyone named Patel.

I just got back from a porn convention in Phoenix. The weather was incredible, especially after several weeks of non-stop rain. It actually got up to 100 on Friday, but I didn't care! I spent most of the day in the pool, with gay porn stars flitting around and free drinks served to me.

15th Annual Hard Choice Awards
